Mumbai to Goa in just 6 hours soon: Nitin Gadkari

Travelling to Goa from Mumbai by road may soon take only six hours due to the construction of a new four-lane concrete highway, Union Minister for Roads Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.

"It will soon take only six-hours to travel between Goa and Mumbai with the four-lane concrete highway we are building," Gadkari said, adding that the rate of road building by his ministry was 22 kms per day.
He was speaking at a function on the occasion of signing a concession agreement between the Mormugao Port Trust and Goa Seaport Pvt Ltd for redevelopment of two berths and other barge berths at the central government facility.

The minister also proposed to shift a port project in Goa's Betul village, which has faced local opposition, to either of the neighbouring states of Maharashtra or Karnataka, on account of a series of protests against it.

He also said an eight km highway will be constructed, connecting the upcoming Mopa airport in North Goa, located 40 kms from Panaji, to the National Highway 17 at the cost of Rs 300 crore.

Vasai-Panvel track nod by September end

The much-awaited Vasai-Panvel suburban rail corridor is likely to get the go-ahead from the Expanded Board of Railways (EBR) — the central agency made up of senior officials of the Railway Ministry, NITI Ayog and financiers — by the end of September. The railway link is expected to improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and make it more accessible.
This is fourth suburban rail project — after the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) III — to receive the go-ahead from EBR within a month.
The 74km Vasai-Panvel suburban corridor worth Rs5, 600crore will have 10 suburban stations and will connect Navi Mumbai directly to the Vasai-Virar-Dahanu section. The project is expected to be complete by 2021.
Currently, more than 2.5 lakh commuters use the existing two railway lines, on which long-distance and goods trains mainly operate.
The Central Railways also operates around 14 Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) and Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services, which are often overcrowded. The frequency is poor as one service plys every two hours.

“We support the Vasai-Panvel suburban corridor as it will augment passenger capacity to a great extent in Mumbai. MUTP III and Vasai-Panvel will together provide great connectivity to the MMR. The project has been cleared by us and will be tabled before the EBR within 10 days,” said Manoj Singh, adviser (transport), National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Ayog.
For 70 lakh suburban commuters, the MUTP III and the Vasai-Panvel corridor could translate into and easier, faster and more comfortable commute by 2021.
The project could also open up large parcels of land near Nilaje, Dativali, Juchandra, Kaman Road, Kharbao, Taloja and Navade Road for development. Housing and commercial projects are already being developed in Kharbao and Taloja.
The projects approved under MUTP III involves expanding the suburban rail network up to Dahanu by constructing a third and fourth line between Virar-Dahanu (63km) and Airoli-Kalwa (4km),which will provide easier access for commuters between Kalyan-Panvel and Panvel-Karjat (28km).
All these projects are likely to receive the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) approval in October, after which they are likely to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the city on October 31, ahead of the 2017 civic polls.

1st sea-world project set to come up in Sindhudurg

Two sleepy villages, about 555 km from Mumbai, in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra are set to host the country’s first sea-world project. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to  scale down the project to less than a fourth of its originally earmarked size of 1390 acres in keeping with the demands of local farmers.
Fadnavis on Thursday directed the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), which is executing the project, to start acquisition of 350 acres of land to create the water-theme amusement park, oceanarium, underwater tunnels, crafts and arts centre and a few tourist resorts

The project, along the lines of the US-based chain of water-theme amusement parks, was approved by the Congress-NCP regime in 2009, but never took off. Attempts by former local MLA and Congress leader Narayan Rane to push the project in his stronghold of Malvan taluka met with stiff resistance from farmers who were opposed to plans to acquire such a large area which would include their multi-crop land. The gram sabhas of the two villages had unanimously passed a resolution opposing the project.
